Since 2020, in the face of the New Coronary Pneumonia virus epidemic, my country's textile industry has been steadily advancing the work of resuming production and production. The production supply capacity and the coordination of the operation of the industrial chain have returned to normal. In the second quarter, driven by the sharp increase in the sales of anti-epidemic assets and the slow recovery of the domestic demand market, the economic operation of the textile industry was under pressure. Although the main operating indicators from January to May were still in the negative growth range, the decline continued to narrow.

The decline in production continued to narrow, and the industrial textile industry accelerated significantly

With the steady progress of normal epidemic prevention and control, production in the textile industry gradually resumed, and the decline continued to narrow. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, from January to May, the industrial added value of the above-scale textile industry decreased by 8.2% year-on-year, the growth rate was 11.8 percentage points lower than the same period of the previous year, but it rose by 3.1 percentage points from January to April this year. The growth rate turned negative to positive for the first time. In all links of the industrial chain, the industrial textile industry maintained a high-speed leading trend. From January to May, the industrial added value increased significantly by 50.7% year-on-year, 58.9 percentage points higher than the growth rate of the entire industry. The apparel and home textile industries were affected by shrinking end demand, and industrial added value decreased by 12.8% and 10.6% year-on-year, respectively. From January to May, the industrial added value of the textile machinery industry decreased by 20.8% year-on-year, reflecting that the industry's investment confidence is still sluggish.

Among the major products, only the output of non-woven fabrics achieved a positive growth of 2.5% year-on-year, while the output of the remaining products decreased. From January to May, the output of chemical fiber, yarn, cloth and apparel of enterprises above designated size decreased by 3.2%, 18.1%, 27.6% and 17.9% year-on-year respectively, and the growth rate was 16.2, 19.7, 27.4 and 17.5 percentage points lower than the same period of the previous year.

The domestic demand market is recovering moderately, and the export situation is still grim

In the second quarter, my country's epidemic prevention and control situation continued to improve, residents' consumption activities increased, and domestic demand for textiles and clothing recovered moderately. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, from January to May, the retail sales of apparel, shoes, hats, and needle textiles in units above designated size nationwide fell by 23.5% year-on-year, a 5.5% increase from January to April this year. Online consumption continued to improve, and the retail sales of online wearable goods nationwide decreased by 6.8% year-on-year, a decrease of 5.2 percentage points from January to April.

The export scale of anti-epidemic materials such as masks has been greatly increased, supporting the textile industry's export decline to gradually narrow. According to Chinese customs data, from January to May, my country's textile and apparel exports amounted to US$100.62 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 2.3%, and the decrease was 8.2 percentage points narrower than the previous 4 months. Among them, masks drove the export value of textiles to 60.36 billion US dollars, a substantial increase of 18.5% year-on-year; the decline in clothing exports continued to show an expanding trend, and the export value from January to May decreased by 22.7% year-on-year, indicating that the international terminal market demand is still sluggish. The textile industry's export market has diverged. From January to May, China's textile and apparel exports to the United States and countries along the “Belt and Road” decreased by 1.5% and 15% year-on-year, respectively, and the textile and apparel exports to Japan and the EU increased by 18.8% and 38% respectively. .
